Jean-Claude had seen what looked like a patron approaching the door, and
moved to open it and allow another to herd back into the managers' office
area. But when he opened the door, there were two people, not one, and
neither looked very stately at all. A young male dragged the girl's trunk,
and Jean-Claude became uncertain whether it was a boy or a man. If he
called him monsieur, it would be appropriate or make a boy feel
complimented....
> "I am sorry but do you not speak english?" She asked out of curiousity. "I

> "That is all that I remember." She said defeated and helped him with her

"You just asked him if he spoke French...not a very good approach if you can
only speak English," Jean-Claude remarked with a smirk. "And I doubt either
language will work because... Monsieur, I believe I have seen you before...
Do you speak at all?"
The boy seemed intent on carrying the luggage himself, so Jean-Claude
cordially held open the door without protest. "I am Jean-Claude Fautrier,
head porter of this opera house. How can I help you, mademoiselle? Are you
expected?" Unexperienced in such things, he could not yet tell if she was a
singer or a dancer.
